Books on Czech Glass |
![]() |
The Czech Republic, formerly Czechoslovakia and before that Bohemia, has been a centre of glass making for the past 600 years. Monastery workshops encouraged glass blowing here in the 13th century. Different areas of Bohemia specialised in different types of glass. Every kind of glass has been made in Bohemia to a very high standard. Today Czech art glass and crystal rivals the best in the world. It is exported at very cheap prices sometimes for re-sale under famous brand names. PRESSED GLASS Many pre-war designs, rare just a few years ago, are now being made and exported at low prices. The skill levels are superb, the glass is excellent; and although it is clearly labelled it is easy to remove labels. Unless a piece has an original old label or a maker's mark, it is very difficult to tell an old piece from a new one. ART GLASS At the top end of the profession, Czech art glass is increasingly recognised as some of the finest in the world.
